Raiders top Jets in sectional final

Madelyn Poe

VEVAY — After falling behind by 12 points early in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Switzerland County Sectional final, Hauser didn’t throw in the towel.

The Jets battled back to within five with about three minutes remaining and had a chance to make it a little closer, but South Ripley withstood the charge and pulled away for a 42-31 victory.

“I’m super proud of how we played,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “I’m proud of our effort. We gave ourselves a chance down the stretch there.”

The Jets (10-12) cut the lead to 36-31 on a 3-pointer by Kyliegh Parrott. The Raiders (16-9) missed the front end of a one-and-one, but grabbed the rebound and scored. South Ripley then hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes while keeping Hauser off the board.

The Raiders outrebounded the Jets 43-28.

“They’re just big and physical, and we didn’t do a good enough job on boxouts to keep them off of the offensive glass,” Shipp said. “Boxouts were one of the big keys going into the game, and we didn’t do a very good job of that, especially in the third quarter.”

Madelyn Poe led Hauser with 14 points. Parrott added six points and eight rebounds.

The Jets had advanced to the final with a 53-46 semifinal win against Milan on Friday.

“One of the things when (junior center) Kenze Bostic goes out (with a foot injury), we had to regroup,” Shipp said. “We had a tough stretch there in January. But I’m super proud of our seniors and they way they represented their school. The standard here at Hauser is to play for a conference championship and play for a sectional championship, and we’ll be back.”
