Columbus Fire Department hires 3 firefighters

The Columbus Fire Department added three firefighters to fill vacancies left by recent retirements. The firefighters were sworn in at Tuesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting by Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop.

Firefighter Tyler Bullard, 23, is a 2018 graduate of Seymour High School and attended the University of Indianapolis where he played football. Bullard is a state certified emergency medical technician is also holds a firefighter I & II certification. Bullard is the son of retired Seymour firefighter Joe Bullard.

Firefighter Jacob Hempstead, 26, is a 2015 graduate of Greensburg High School. Hempstead is a nationally registered emergency medical technician. Additional certifications include firefighter I & II and several awareness-level courses. Hempstead worked for the City of Rushville Fire Department for one year and has served as volunteer firefighter for the Letts Volunteer Fire Department for eight years.

Firefighter Johnathon Rogers, 29, is a 2012 graduate of Columbus Signature Academy and attended Ivy Tech Community College and the Community College of the Air Force. Rogers served six years of active duty with the United States Air Force, where he was assigned to the 35th Security Forces Squadron and the 791st Missile Security Forces Squadron. Rogers also served two years in the Air Force Reserves assigned to the 445th Security Force Squadron at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He is a nationally registered emergency medical technician and has been employed by Columbus Regional Health ambulance service for one year.

All firefighters will undergo a department orientation training program. At the completion of all training requirements, each firefighter will receive a station and shift assignment.
