Odean Edwin “Ed” Hjelter, Sr.

Odean Edwin “Ed” Hjelter, Sr., 93 of Columbus passed away Monday March 20, 2023 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Born June 25, 1929 in Opheim, Montana Mr. Hjelter was the son of Elmer and Ellen Transburg Hjelter. He married Loval L. Henry December 31, 1952 and she preceded him in death on January 8, 2019.

Mr. Hjelter retired from Cummins as a Specification Engineer.

He served many years in the U.S. Army and was in active service during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed gardening and other yardwork and repairing vehicles and lawnmowers.

Mr. Hjelter is survived by a son, Odean “Buzz” (Barb) Hjelter, Jr. of Columbus; a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth (Adam) Meredith of Henderson, KY. and several nieces and nehews.

A funeral service for Mr. Hjelter will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Pastor Tim Carter officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery and a military graveside service will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Hjelter was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ellen; his wife, Loval; five brothers and 4 sisters.
