1:30 p.m. update

Bartholomew County Emergency Management said the food warning continues for the Driftwood River near Edinburgh, the Big  Blue River at Shelbyville, the Flatrock River near Columbus and the East Fork White River in Columbus, along with the Muscatatuck River at Vernon in Jennings County

Rainfall totals of an inch to an inch and a half north of I-70 and 2 to 3 inches along and south of there over the past two days will combine with additional rainfall tonight to produce moderate river flooding along the lower White River and nearby tributaries, officials said.

Widespread minor river flooding is expected along the Wabash and East Fork White, with potential for moderate flooding at Seymour on the East Fork White. Until the heavy rainfall exits the area late tonight there remains potential for locally heavy rain to make the flooding worse over southern parts of central Indiana. The crests on the Wabash, White, and East Fork White are expected to arrive on upper portions of the rivers early to late in the weekend and start working their way downriver. Minor flooding is expected to last on main stem rivers well into next week.

9:45 a.m. update

Mt. Healthy Elementary students had an eLearning day on Friday due to concerns about the effect of flooding on morning commutes.

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. officials first communicated the news to parents and staff via ParentSquare, then shared a social media post at about 5:30 a.m. Mt. Healthy was the only school to go virtual; the rest of BCSC operated in person as usual.

BCSC Communications Coordinator Josh Burnett said that the decision was made out of caution, due to concerns about the safety of roads commonly used by Mt. Healthy families and school buses.

“Some of these roads have creeks and waterways that are continuing to rise,” he said. School officials hope that the rains and flooding will subside over the weekend.

Students and staff were prepared for the possibility of an eLearning day in advance, and the decision was made Friday morning.

There were no flooding issues with the school building as of 8:15 a.m.

Mt. Healthy previously had an early dismissal on March 3 due to rising water on several roads around the school.

PEOPLE TRAILS

Several portions of the People Trail system including State Road 46, Mill Race Park,
Northbrook, and Noblitt Park are expected to close due to high water.

Due to heavy rains in the area today, more sections of the People Trail may become
inaccessible due to rising water this coming weekend.
All areas will be reopened after the water has receded and crews have cleaned any
mud and debris left behind.

9:30 a.m. update

The National Weather Service is reporting that the northern half of Bartholomew County has received about an inch of rain so far, with the southern half of Bartholomew County in a range of 1 inch to 1.5 inches. An additional 2 to 3 inches of rain is expected through Saturday morning. A greater risk of higher rainfall amounts and flooding potential has shifted further south closer to the Ohio River.

Flash flooding is possible during periods of heavy rainfall, especially in low-lying and flood prone areas. Creek and river flooding is possible today through the weekend.

The National Weather Service is now predicting Flatrock and East Fork White rivers will have minor flooding with the Driftwood River reaching moderate flood stage.

High water and road closings list will be updated at therepublic.com throughout the day.
