Club Olympia wins 10U Boys state team title

Club Olympia’s 10-and-under Boys took home the team championship from last wekeend’s Indiana Swimming Age-Group State Championship at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

Club Olympia finished in 13th in combined boys and girls overall scoring and eighth in boys scoring, while competing against 76 other teams.

Tony Machavariani led Club Olympia in scoring with 117 points, followed by Josh Pendleton with 107 and Shreyan Kulkarni with 79.

Machavariani won the 10U Boys individual high point award with five wins and one second-place finish. He won the 50-yard butterfly, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley and placed second in the 100 freestyle. Kulkarni podiumed (received a medal with a top-eight finish) in all six of his individual events, finishing fifth in the 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 IM; seventh in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 50 butterfly.

Aahan Gupta just missed scoring by finishing 17th in the 100 butterfly. Chad Pendleton took 19th in the 200 freestyle and 30th in the 100 freestyle. Vivan Shah was 34th in the 50 backstroke. Gupta, Kulkarni, Machavariani and Pendleton placed third in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. Also participating as a relay alternate was Sarthak Deshmukh.

Joshua Pendleton placed second in the 11-12 Boys high point standings by winning the 200 IM, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and placing second in the 100 butterfly, third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. His time in the 500 freestyle ranks him 11th in the nation for the 11-12 age group. He is also 21st in the 200 freestyle, tied for 40th in the 100 freestyle, tied for 45th in the 100 butterfly, and 63rd in the 200 IM. Pendleton currently is first in the nation in the 1,650 freestyle, seventh in the 1,000 freestyle and 15th in the 200 butterfly, all of which are not events contested at Age Group State for the 11-12 age group.

Lily Pendleton competed in the maximum allowable six events in her first Age Group State Championship, placing 11th in the 10U Girls 100 butterfly, 13th in the 50 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle to score 13 points. She also finished 18th in the 50 butterfly, 19th in the 200 freestyle and 21st in the 200 IM.

Connelly Furnish also contributed to Club Olympia’s overall point total with a 13th-place finish in the 13-14 Girls 1,650 freestyle. She also took 17th in the 500 freestyle and 37th in the 200 IM.

Although turning 11 less than three months ago, Camila and Rebeca Mejia Murguia were able to meet time standards and compete in several of the 11-12 Girls events. Camila finished 25th in the 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly, 30th in the 50 backstroke, 37th in the 100 freestyle, 40th in the 50 freestyle, and 43rd in the 200 freestyle. Rebecca was 50th in the 50 freestyle.
