William Bruce Engle

COLUMBUS, INDIANA

William “CB” Bruce Engle, 72, passed away in Columbus, Indiana on March 15, 2023. Born to Billy Joe Engle and Verta Mae Heikes of Vincennes, Indiana. Engle graduated from Lincoln High School in Vincennes, Indiana in 1968, then went on to obtain a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in 1972, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Upon graduation, Engle began his 38 year career with Reliance Electric Company/Rockwell Automation/Baldor Electric Company. In 1979, Engle earned an MBA in Marketing from Xavier University. Engle is also credited with the invention of a submersible gearmotor while working for the Reliance Electric Company in 1981.

In 1973, Engle married Regina Teresa Dailey of Churchville, Pennsylvania, and briefly moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin before settling in Columbus, Indiana, where the couple raised their three children. In 1994, Engle moved with his family to Greenville, South Carolina, where he served as a plant manager for Rockwell Automation, later Baldor Electric Company, until his retirement.

A consummate gearhead, Engle could often be found in his off-time working with the National Hot Rod Association or the National Muscle Car Association. In Columbus, Engle served as an officer and member of Rotary International, United Way of Bartholomew County, and various community boards. In Greenville, Engle served on the Manufacturing Committee of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and sat on the Board of Directors of the Greenville Area Development Corporation and United Way of Greenville County.

Engle is survived by two brothers, Pat Engle of Tulalip, Washington, and Steven (Jamie) Engle of Fort Myers, Florida; his spouse of 42 years; three children, Katia (John) Hatter of Columbus, IN, Cory (Oanh) Engle of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Kevin Engle; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be sent to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, the United Way of Bartholomew County (IN) or the United Way of Greenville County (SC).
