SOFTBALL

North sweeps pair

TERRE HAUTE — Class 4A No. 4 Columbus North won a pair of games on Saturday, posting an 8-5 Conference Indiana win at Terre Haute South and a 4-0 victory against Castle.

Maddi Rutan went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, Kelsey Lovelace went 3 for 4, Bailey King went 2 for 2 with a double, and Peyton Morris went 2 for 4. Morris and winning pitcher Bailee Scruggs combined on a five-hitter.

Against Castle, Rutan threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts, and King went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Bull Dogs (6-0-1).

East earns split

Columbus East bounced back from a 7-1 first-game loss to defeat Mt. Vernon 10-5 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Kaylee Cole went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Kenzie Foster went 3 for 4, Addy Ross went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Maryn Mayes went 2 for 4 with a double in the second game for the Olympians (8-2). Megan Kennedy pitched the first six innings to pick up the win.

GIRLS TENNIS

North downs Devils

JEFFERSONVILLE — No. 8 Columbus North won four matches in straight sets in a 4-1 win at Jeffersonville.

Kathryn Wilson beat Eva Ellis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Aya Saad blanked Abby Leer 5-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Lucy Bergman topped Anellah Trujille 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (6-0). Annabelle Sun and Lison Cloteaux defeated Claire Stock and Jezel Lopez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

North’s Grace Connor and Nino Akhayla fell to Kirstin Elder and Sara Sharp 6-1, 7-6 (5), (10-7) at No. 2 doubles.

Batesville edges Jets

BATESVILLE — Hauser was missing No. 1 singles player Bella Kilps and took a 3-2 loss at Batesville.

Mattie Foster and Addyson Barriger beat Cayman Werner and Belle Westerfeld 7-6, 4-6, (10-6) at No. 1 doubles for the Jets (2-3). Abby Blair and Kayden Miller topped Madison Wanstrath and Josie Meyer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Hauser’s Charlie Clark fell to Summer Ratcliffe 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Lydia Jordan lost to Laney Walsman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Yulia Karkusha fell to Annie Negovetich 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Panthers top Trinity

SEYMOUR — Jennings County posted its first win of the season, a 4-1 victory at Trinity Lutheran.

Tatum Brown blanked Siddah Hall 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Kaydence Lowman beat Layla Jones at No. 2 singles, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores for the Panthers (1-3). Jennings’ Mia Silvey topped Samantha Enzinger 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Gabi Morin and Jocelyn Valdovinos defeated Natalee Martinez and Emily Keller 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 doubles.

The Cougars’ point came at No. 1 doubles, where Kiley Zabel and Drew Hubbard beat Makenzey Carr and Trina Collins 6-0, 6-1.

Eagles drop three

MUNCIE — Brown County went 0-3 in the Delta Invitational, falling to No. 30 West Lafayette 4-1, No. 9 Westfield 4-1 and No. 18 Delta (in short sets) 5-0.

Ava Kelly and Cady Kemp won a third-set supertiebreaker at No. 2 doubles against West Lafayette, and Julia Burt won a third-set supertiebreaker at No. 3 singles against Westfield for the Eagles.

BOYS GOLF

North takes seventh

GREENWOOD — No. 9 Columbus North finished seventh out of 18 teams with a 320 in the Franklin Central Invitational at Hickory Stick. Silver Creek won with a 293.

Tyler Wilks led the Bull Dogs with a 75. Willy Davis carded a 78, John Merritt added a n 81, Joseph Perkins shot 85 and Jack Schiavello had an 88.

Columbus East finished 12th with a 335. Ben Luedeke led the Olympians with an 82, while Carter Greene added an 83, Pierce Arnholt and Jamall Starks each shot 85 and Spencer Erfmeier had an 88.

Panthers finish fifth

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County finished fifth out of 12 teams with a 351 in its own invitational at St. Anne’s. Madison won with a 302.

Jack George led the Panthers with an 83. Eli Simmons carded an 85, Davey Shaw added a 90, Tanner Stearns shot 93 and Sam Hauerspereger had a 109.

The Columbus East JV finished 10th with a 389. Luke Rice led the Olympians with a 91, while Keaton Stephenson shot 96, Mason Reeves 98, Josh Stewart 104 and Danny Coriden 111.

Eagles shoot 394

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County scored a 394 in the Edgewood Invitational at Cascades.

Clay Austin led the Eagles with an 85. Wesley Arndt carded a 94, Liam Cassiday added a 103, Bradley Arndt shot 112 and Will Hiatt had a 115.

BASEBALL

East falls to Franklin

Franklin scored five times in the first inning and went on to hand Columbus East a 10-3 defeat.

Five different players had a single for the Olympians (1-7). Caleb Martoccia had two RBIs.

Tigers, Braves top Jets

HOPE — Hauser lost a pair of 9-2 decisions against Lawrenceburg and Brownstown Central.

Holden Pittman went 2 for 3 with a double against Lawrenceburg and 2 for 3 against Brownstown for the Jets (6-4).

Cougars blank Pacers

GREENSBURG — Devin Pate threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead South Decatur to a 2-0 win against Switzerland County.

Cameron Henderson had a double, and J.P. Scudder had an RBI-single for the only hits for the Cougars (6-1).

TRACK AND FIELD

North runs in Showcase

INDIANAPOLIS — Lily Baker finished fifth in the girls Miracle Mile Friday night to lead Columbus North runners in the Franklin Central Distance Showcase.

Baker was clocked in 4 minutes, 59.25 seconds. The Bull Dogs’ Julia Kiesler finished 16th (5:08.37), Julie Klaus took 19th (5:13.51) and Kyleigh Wolf was 42nd (5:19.21), and Brown County’s Hadley Gradolf came in 77th (5:37.81). North also finished 12th in the 4×800-meter relay in 10:26.59.

The Bull Dogs’ Will Russell finished ninth in 4:16.63 in the boys Miracle Mile, while Mateo Mendez took 31st (4:23.50), and Adler Larson was 46th (4:26.04). Brown County’s Chase Austin finished 27th in the Miracle Mile in 4:23.13. North finished fifth in the 4×800 relay (8:15.72), while Brown County was 18th (8:54.22).

In the boys Freshman Mile, North’s Logan Vanzant finished 14th (4:41.76), Leyton Hottell 44th (4:51.01) and Denton Sluder 60th (4:58.45).
