Letter: Mary Ferdon a servant leader Columbus deserves as mayor

From: Julie Abedian

Columbus

My name is Julie Abedian and I am writing in support of my friend, Mary Ferdon, in her bid to become mayor of Columbus, Indiana. Although I have had the privilege of working with Mary in my professional capacity, I am writing here as her friend, and I want to address her personal characteristics that I believe qualify her to lead our great community.

I first met Mary in the concession stand at Westenedge Park during a soccer game. We both were and are proud soccer moms of boys who played. She was always one to raise her hand to help and if necessary to lead efforts to support the teams, players, and coaches. Her support of her boys’ teams was emblematic of the kind of parent she always has been: involved, caring, and leading quietly by example. She always has prioritized her family and her role as a mother and parent.

When Mary is around young people, you see a side of her that she doesn’t get an opportunity to show very often in her role in the city, but it’s a side that truly is core to who she is. She wants everyone to succeed, regardless of their circumstances. She wants every young person to have the benefits and advantages she gave to her sons. Mary came from humble beginnings and knows the obstacles that face many young people in our community. I know as mayor she will have that same focus on ensuring that all young people in Columbus have what they need to succeed.

Mary also is a woman who lives her Christian faith. I have been inspired over the years to hear her stories of her mission work dating back decades. Her mission work is also a reflection of her commitment to being a servant leader. Her work in the community is a reflection of her inherently kind nature. Our community deserves a mayor like Mary Ferdon.
