Talk about high-profile success.

Former Indiana University voice and theater major Elizabeth Stanley has been nominated for a Tony Award for best actress in a musical and has won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. She brings her talents to the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s Cabaret at The Commons series for a 7:30 p.m. June 1 concert at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in downtown Columbus.

Her planned performance will include selections from “Songs for a New World,” “Bridges of Madison County,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Company,” “A Little Night Music,” and more.

While at IU, she was an active member of the Singing Hoosiers (and Varsity Singers), as well as Broadway Cabaret. She was a soloist in Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” with IU’s Opera Theatre, in addition to playing Cinderella in “Into the Woods” and Mabel in “The Pirates of Penzance” with the IU Theatre Department.

To this day, she considers her best friends to be those she found at IU while rehearsing classic American songs with a special group of women adopting the nickname of “the Bees.” Stanley also appeared in numerous student-produced productions.

She made her Broadway debut as April in the 2006 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” In 2008, she originated the role of Allison in “Cry-Baby,” a musical adaption of the film of the same name.

The following year, she starred as Clio in the first national tour of “Xanadu,” — and still laughs about not being a skater when she auditioned for that extensive skating role. In 2010, she originated the role of Dyanne in the Broadway production of “Million Dollar Quartet.”

In 2014, she played Claire de Loone in the Broadway revival of “On the Town.” For this role, she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. In 2015, she starred as Francesca in the national tour of “The Bridges of Madison County.”

Stanley originated the role of Mary Jane Healy in the American Repertory Theater production of “Jagged Little Pill,” a musical based on Alanis Morissette’s album of the same name.

Her TV credits include “Fringe,” “The Chappelle Show,” and “PBS Great Performances.”
