JACKSON COUNTY — Indiana State Police troopers from the Versailles Post are investigating a single-vehicle accident on I-65 in southern Jackson County Saturday resulting in a Columbus woman being airlifted from the scene with serious injuries.

At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, state police said a brown 2007 Dodge driven by Edward D. E. Garrett, 32, Columbus, was traveling north on I-65 near the 42 mile marker, north of Crothersville, where for an unknown reason, Garrett lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle left the road and rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its top, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.  Edward Garrett was not injured in the crash. Garrett’s wife, Valerie Garrett, 32, Columbus, was entrapped in the vehicle with possible serious injuries, he said.

The Seymour Fire Department extricated her from the vehicle. She was flown from the scene for further treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Wheeles said.

Investigators believe speed and unsafe lane movements played a role in the crash. Edward Garrett submitted to a test for intoxication. Those results are pending at this time.

I-65 northbound was closed for approximately 1.5 hours for crash investigation and cleanup.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Crothersville Police Department, Seymour Fire Department, Vernon Township Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, IU Medical Helicopter, and Howard’s Wrecker Service.
