Heartland run raises thousands for Riley

The Heartland 5k Run and Walk to benefit Riley Children’s Hospital held on May 13 raised more than $10,000 to support children who are patients. This exceeds last year’s total of $6,500, said race coordinator Steve Bayer.

Nearly 102 years ago, a bond was created between Riley Children’s Hospital and all Kiwanis Clubs in Indiana to support Riley and those they serve.

This year, 270 runners and walkers participated in the Heartland event. A new addition this year was the Foundation for Youth’s runners known as the Trailblazers (boys) and the “Girls in the Run” (girls), who spent 10 weeks in training for the event.

Next year’s race, the third annual, will be May 11 at Ivy Tech Community College, Bayer said.
