Prep sports notebook: Locals named All-State

Three local players are on the 2023 softball all-state teams that were announced on Wednesday by the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana.

Columbus North senior Maddi Rutan and Columbus East senior Kenzie Foster were named 3A/4A first team All-State. Hauser senior Hannah Taylor was named 1A/2A third-team All-State.

Rutan, who was the leading vote-getter in District 4, is one of five Miss Softball candidates, along with Roncalli’s Keagan Rothrock, North Posey’s Erin Hoehn, Leo’s Ellie Suader and New Prairie’s Abby Robakwski.

Rutan and Foster were named to South All-Star team that will play the North on June 24 at Indiana University.

Also, Columbus North coach Ron McDonald was named the District 4 Coach of the Year.

Poludasu makes Academic All-State

Columbus North senior girls tennis player Siri Poludasu has been named to the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Academic All-State Team.

Taylor named sectional MVP

Hauser’s Hannah Taylor was named MVP of last week’s Brownstown Central softball sectional.

The Jets’ Paige McDaniel, Kyra Meister and Haylin Campbell also made the All-Sectional team.

Bunker takes 2nd in Tour Championship

Ava Bunker, who won state medalist honors while playing for Columbus North at the Girls Golf State Finals last fall, finished second in last weekend’s Golfweek Junior Tour Championship.

Bunker shot rounds of 68, 72 and 71 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky, to finish at 5-under-par 211 for the 54-hole tournament. She was named first-team All-Tour for the third time.

North football to host golf outing

The Columbus North football team will be hosting Golf for the Gridiron at 1 p.m. on June 9 at Otter Creek with a dinner and reception to follow.

East to hold boys, girls hoops camps

New Columbus East girls and boys basketball coaches Kaitlyn Phillips and Perry Nash will be holding camps this summer.

The girls basketball camp will be June 21 to 23. Times are 5 to 6:15 p.m. for girls entering Kindergarten through second grade, 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. for girls entering Grades 3-5 and 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. for girls entering Grades 6-8.

The boys basketball camp will be July 17 to 20. Times are 4 to 5 p.m. for Grades 1-3, 4 to 5:30 p.m. for Grades 4-6 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. for Grades 7-8.
