North sweeps Challenge

NASHVILLE — Columbus North’s boys and girls opened their seasons Wednesday by sweeping the Brown County XC Challenge.

The meet was a 5K Hokum-Karem, with two-person teams each running 2500 meters (1.55 miles). The top three two-person teams from each school were added to form their total.

The Bull Dog boys scored nine points to 18 for Silver Creek, 34 for Brown County, 39 for Columbus East and 46 for Waldron. North’s girls scored a perfect six points to 21 for East, while the other four teams did not have enough runners to score.

In the girls race, the Bull Dogs had the top five teams. Lana Wisler and Ainsley Sherlock won in 19 minutes, 57.7 seconds, followed by Kyliegh Wolf and Kenzie Pendleton (20:03.5) and Macy Eaton and Maggie Russell (20:09.1), Adira Sluder and Emma Lowther (20:39.4) and Lydia Weed and Tristan Works (20:49.2).

East’s Victoria Cuhadar and Carly Otte finished sixth in 20:50.4. Amelia Fay and Megumi Going took 11th in 22:09.7, and Abby Collins and Carsyn Schlehuser were 16th in 23:21.7.

Brown County’s Izzy Miller and Della Hitchcock finished 19th in 24:18.0, and Livie Austin and Sadie Hiatt were 20th in 24:24.8.

For the boys, North’s Adam Reckers and Neal white finished second in 16:00.5. Jace Works and Draven Martinez took third in 16:01.0, and Evan Bense and Jonny Klaus were fifth in 16:29.9.

Eli Wrightsman and Charlie Webb led Brown County with an eighth-place finish in 17:42.4. Corbin Brahaum and Kai Koester took 12th in 18:20.5, and Carter Condon and Xavier Himbaugh were 14th in 20:00.6.

East’s Lorren Westerfeld and Jackson Brookes finished 11th in 18:20.1. Austin Menefee and Elijah Clore took 13th in 19:45.9, and Asher Stevens and Chris Gilroy were 15th in 20:22.3.

East falls to BN

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East outshot Bloomington North 8-6, but hit a post and a crossbar in opening the season with a 3-1 loss at Bloomington North.

Nadia Harris scored the goal for the Olympians off an assist from Maleah Dyette. Kate Stiles recorded three saves in goal.

Panthers blank East

Bloomington South won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 win at Columbus East.

Erik Takahashi fell to David Ciucu 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Brady Redelman lost to Alex Busch 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Tyler Ernst fell to Austin Spier 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (0-2).

East’s Jacob Dettmer and Ethan Bumbalough lost to Josh Sang and Abe Corry 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Iynigo Tan and Henry Ulrich fell to Ethan Peyton and William Liao 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Panthers rout Austin

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County scored nine times in the first half and went on to post a 12-0 season-opening win against Salem.

Keiton Miller led the Panthers with five goals and one assist. Stone Mull scored two goals, and Cole Bingham and Fernando Abarca each had one goal and two assists.

Alex Cook netted one goal and one assist, and Chris Hernandez and Jacob Ferguson each scored one goal. Guainer Velazquez and Zach Barton each added one assist.

GIRLS GOLF

Lancers take second

TRAFALGAR — Edinburgh finished second in a tri match at Tameka Woods. Greensburg won with a 222 to 236 for the Lancers and 242 for host Indian Creek.

Macie Blandford led Edinburgh with a 44. Izzy Richardson added a 58. Bella Turner shot 66 and Sophia Pace had a 68.

Floyd tops Panthers

FLOYDS KNOBS — Jennings County battled back from a 2-0 deficit to even the match, but Floyd Central took the fifth set to pull out a 25-12, 25-11, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11 Hoosier Hills Conference win.

Avynn Belding led the Panthers (1-1, 0-1) with 17 kills and six blocks. Mallory Manowitz recorded 38 digs, and Aylan Belding served three aces. Charlee Barlow added 11 kills and four blocks.
