Marjorie L. Porter

COLUMBUS

Marjorie L. Porter passed away on the morning of September 12, 2023. She was born on August 21, 1923, in Columbus, Indiana the daughter of Alvin and Alma Schumacher Linsmith. She was an only child and dearly loved by her parents and extended family of aunts and uncles she grew up with. She loved them equally and cared for all of them into their elder years. She married Donald B. Porter on August 22, 1948.

Marjorie had just celebrated her 100th birthday with her family in August of 2023 in Columbus. Her family was her greatest achievement and greatest joy. She was a generous, loving mother and grandmother who doted on her family. She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Porter, Melinda Huber, and Annette Gantner, and her three grandchildren Collin Huber, Meredith Gantner, and Paige Gantner. Other surviving family members include Brian Huber and Bob Hazen, sons-in-law, Cheryl Hailway, niece, and Mark Fischer, Jana Fischer, Dr. Micah Fischer, and Max Fischer, cousins.

Marjorie graduated from Columbus High School and then enrolled in Columbus Business College where she earned a degree in typing, shorthand, and other secretarial skills. After graduation and several early jobs, Judge George W. Long asked her to interview for the Court Reporter position in the Circuit Court. She was hired at 19 making her the youngest court reporter to work for the Circuit Court. From there, she joined the Columbus Process Company where she worked until 1950. When she returned to the workforce after her children were in school, she was a skilled legal secretary and was employed by Walker and Conner then Jurgemeyer and Thomasson. She later worked for Cummins and retired at 62.

Marjorie had many interests and hobbies. She was an excellent cook and hostess and loved to entertain family and friends. She was an avid reader and card player, and Bridge was one of her favorite games and she was an accomplished Bridge player. She also enjoyed word games and crossword puzzles.

As a loyal member of the Democrat party, Marjorie was a strong campaigner in both presidential, Senate, and Congressional elections on a local level.

Marjorie was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbus. She cherished her Church and her faith. Her Bible and prayer book were always close at hand and a daily source of peace and comfort.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Porter, and twin sisters who died at birth.

The funeral service will be Thursday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Mark Teike officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.

Entombment will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum.

In memory of Marjorie memorial contributions may be given through the funeral home to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
