WARREN

David J. Smith, 89, Warren, previously from Marion, passed away at 5:24 pm on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Heritage Pointe in Warren. He was born in Hornell, New York, on Friday, February 2, 1934, to Kenneth and Madge (May) Smith. On June 17, 1955, he married Evalena R. Poffenberger, and she survives.

David graduated from North Vernon High School in Southern Indiana and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University. He was a Senior Engineer for 35 years with RCA/Thomson Consumer Electronics. David was very active in his churches, especially his time with First Baptist Church in Marion. He was proud of his education and was senior class president of his high school and had been in the fraternity at Purdue. David enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening, especially flowers. He was also an avid Purdue Boilermaker fan. David will be remembered as a gentle, kind, patient, and humble man of faith who will be missed dearly.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, survivors include his children, Laura (Joe) Beck of Sweetser, Greg (Jerri) Smith of Noblesville, Kathy (late Mike) McCarter of Kokomo, and Mark Smith of Marion; grandchildren, Lindsay (Cory) Harkins, Bethany (Adam) Welch, Jordan Smith, Brieanna Davis, Jennifer Pemberton, and Brittany (Joe) Rector; step-granddaughter, Kristine; step-grandson, Chad McCarter; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Phyllis Hale and Mary Alice Yates; and brother, Richard Smith.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral &Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate David’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with his son, Greg Smith, officiating. Burial will take place at Gardens of Memory in Marion.
