COLUMBUS
Rev, James E. Barnhart, 76, of Columbus, passed away on December 5, 2023, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
James was born September 23, 1947, in Niagara Falls, New York, the son of Lemoine V. and Thelma Ann Dale Barnhart. He married Charlotte M. Hodapp on February 14, 1966, and they spent 57 wonderful years together.
James pastored Ritter Avenue Baptist Church in Indianapolis for 15 years and was employed at Golden Foundry for several years. He loved antiques, and along with his wife owned and operated J &B’s Treasure Chest. James loved to “wheel and deal”, and often could be heard negotiating the asking price for various items. He enjoyed the “back and forth” exchange that would take place. Most of all, James loved his family. He often was most content playing and napping with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved the time he spent with them. James will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte; daughters Wanda J. (John Zieleniuk) Atkinson of Columbus and Susan M. Stallings of Mt. Vernon, Indiana; grandchildren Tiffany, Erica, and Josh Atkinson, and Jessica Stallings; great-grandchildren Lillian and Cayden Jordan, as well as Carter and Jaxon Atkinson; brothers Jerry L. (Rita) Barnhart of Scipio and Terry L. (Kathy) Barnhart of Jonesville; as well as several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson Benjamin Wesley Stallings; a great-granddaughter Sophia Cowan; brothers Lemoine Sonny Barnhart, Donald Lee Barnhart, Charles David Barnhart, and Roger Dale Barnhart; as well as a sister Dorothy Ann Reynolds.
The funeral was at 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Douglas Smith and Rev. Jerry Barnhart officiating. Visitation was from 3:00 p.m. until time of the service Friday.
