Columbus East’s boys and Columbus North’s girls put together big performances Tuesday evening, and as a result, came away with lopsided victories in the crosstown dual meet.

The Olympian boys were victorious 119-67. The Bull Frog girls came away with a 113-72 victory.

“I think we brought as much effort as we were hoping,” said East senior Cavan Stilson, who won two events in the boys meet. “It’s the North meet, so it’s our biggest competition. We were really hoping to beat these guys again this year. Our practices, we’ve been really working on our mental toughness, and I think it showed.”

North’s Katie Frazier was a double-winner in the girls meet. She took the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 8.20 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:52.04.

“It was a really fun meet,” Frazier said. “We all did our best and tried our hardest. We’ve been preparing for this for awhile, so it’s really great. I think everyone did really great today. I’m really proud of everyone on the team. I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Other winners for the Bull Frog girls were Brooklyn Pendleton in the 50 freestyle (27.38), Georgia Abdallah in the 100 freestyle (1:00.11), Mridula Muthakumaran in the 100 backstoke (1:07.00) and Ainsley Sherlock in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.65). North also captured the 200 medley (2:00.04) and 200 freestyle (1:47.73) relays.

“We had a lot of fast swimming going on today, a lot of season-best times,” North coach Mike Cunningham said. “We were racing.”

East’s Connelly Furnish won the 200 individual medley (2:18.65) and 100 butterfly (1:03.47). Gabbie Meier took the diving competition (221.40) and the Olympians captured the 400 freestyle relay (4:02.68).

“The girls kind of got a little bit of a wakeup call tonight,” East coach Doug Trueblood said. “Our girls are there. They’re knocking on the door, but we have to be putting in the work and the effort to be as fast as we need to be. The North girls, Mike and (assistant coach) Barb (Cunningham) have them swimming fast. They have some kids swimming really well. I look forward to seeing what our girls can do to try to push them when we get to sectional.”

On the boys side, East was led by a trio of double winners. Stilson took the 50 freestyle (22.55) and 100 freestyle (49.89), Keaton Stephenson captured the 200 freestyle (1:52.16) and 500 freestyle (5:11.46) and Misha Machavariani won the 100 butterfly (53.87) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.58).

“I think our experience really showed how hard we’ve worked and that we’ve been putting every effort we can in at practice day in and day out,” Stephenson said. “It really showed in the small details.”

“I’m proud of all my teammates,” Machavariani added. “When one of us fell down, we picked each other up. We showed incredible detail in our practices. We trained a lot of endurance, and a lot of effort was shown to get us to where we are today.”

The Olympians also got wins from Todd Hundley in the 200 IM (2:08.39), Gavin Day in the diving (247.90), Judah Nickoll in the 100 backstroke (57.25) and its 200 medley (1:41.83) and 400 freestyle (3:26.09) relay teams.

North’s lone win came from in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.84). The Bull Frogs were without top swimmer Diego Cotero Tapia, who had to return to Mexico because of issues with his Visa.

“I thought the boys were ready to swim,” Doug Trueblood said. “The boys swam hard. Their boys swam real hard. They’re missing Diego today, which is a big factor for them. I think it changes the energy a little bit, but our kids still came in, and we were pushing for it. I think even with full strength, both of us were very evenly-matched teams. That was just good racing. That’s good for Columbus right there to see two teams going after it and having a good time and going after it. We’re early in the season, so both of us are going to continue to get better.”
