Pizza fundraiser may feature NVPD officers on delivery

NORTH VERNON — If you phone in a pizza delivery order to Big Head Pizza on Wednesday, your order may arrive courtesy of a North Vernon police squad vehicle.

Big Head Pizza is hosting a fundraiser to support the North Vernon Police Department on Wednesday, June 12.

Gary Driver, a retired officer, had the idea and approached the NVPD with it. Driver’s goal is to raise enough funds to allow the police to take their patrol cars to a local car wash for an unlimited number of times for a year.

“I just thought that would be a way to help them,” said Driver. Officers are required to keep their patrol cars clean.

Big Head Pizza is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and a percentage of sales will go to the department if the customer mentions the North Vernon police and the fundraiser. Delivery is also available, and through the partnership with the department, officers may be the ones delivering.

Driver was inspired by the parent teacher organization fundraiser night where teachers deliver the pizza. He said that the personal connection this makes with the kids is meaningful, so he wanted to try and emulate the sense of community engagement by officers potentially delivering. Big Head Pizza has participated in other fundraisers, but this will be their first with the police department.

“If I can raise the money, or help raise it myself, I just think that can make a difference,” said Driver.

Big Head Pizza will also accept donations for the cause on Wednesday. They are located at 614 E. Buckeye St., and can be contacted at 812-352-9898.
