Brinegar misses final in 800 freestyle, still has chance in 1,500

Michael Brinegar

INDIANAPOLIS — If Michael Brinegar is going to make it to a second consecutive Olympic Games, he’s going to have to do it in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Brinegar, who swam in the Tokyo Olympics in the 800 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle in 2021, did not make the finals of the 800 freestyle in this year’s US Olympic Trials: Swimming. He finished 12th in Monday’s preliminaries in 8 minutes, 0.15-seconds. The top eight qualified for Tuesday night’s final at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Luke Whitlock of Noblesville swam the fastest qualifying time at 7:51.22. Reigning Olympic champion and American record holder Bobby Finke was second at 7:51.71. It took 7:56.47 to make the final.

Brinegar has one more chance to make the Olympic team. He competes in the 1,500 freestyle prelims on Saturday. The final is Sunday night.
