For his birthday, 5-year-old Archer Cantrell of Columbus asked for donations for a soldier instead of toys. A box full of donated goods, including snacks, toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant, was sent to United States Marine Brant LaRue of Hope while he was deployed.

1999

A dedication ceremony for Maj. Gen. Kenneth Wayne Himsel Airfield was held at Camp Atterbury, with about 300 people in attendance. Maj. Gen. Himsel was a Vietnam War veteran and Indiana Ranger who died in 1992.

1974

Charles Jay Slaughter of Columbus was presented a letter of commendation by Vice-Admiral D.J. Murphy, Commander of the Sixth Fleet, while serving in the U.S. Navy. Slaughter was commended for his “meritorious performance of duty” while on the staff of Commander Task Force Sixty from July 15, 1972 to June 15, 1974.
