City officials approved a contract to replace the boiler system at a local senior housing facility.
The Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety on Tuesday approved a $28,000 contract with Nading Mechanical for work on Town and Garden apartments, located at 428 Pearl Street. The contract will be paid for using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, Director of Community Development Robin Hilber said previously.
Back in December of 2022, the city approved a sub-recipient agreement so the Southern Indiana Housing and Community Development Corp. (SIHCDC) could receive $53,000 of CDBG funds from the city. SIHCDC used that money to renovate the Town and Garden apartments, which included the removal of bathtubs, installation of walk-in showers and replacement of flooring to remove trip hazards.
DLD Mechanical, LLC had been enlisted to do the aforementioned renovations and completed the majority of them, but the renovations were also to include an update to the boiler system that never came to fruition.
The board in May voted to approve the mutual release of DLD from their contract with the city. Administrative Resources association (ARa) Executive Director Tobi Herron said of DLD and the boiler installation at the time that “I think that they were not interested in it. I also think maybe they just didn’t fully understand the scope of the work.”
During a meeting on August 27, the board opened bids for work on the apartments reserved for low to moderate-income seniors and Nading Mechanical was the sole bid.
The contract states the boiler system update is to be completed by December 1.
