After drawing Class 3A No. 1 Center Grove in the opening round of the boys soccer sectional, Columbus East was happy to test themselves against another one of the state’s top teams in 3A No. 8 Bloomington South.
The Olympians found out how much they likely will need to improve after falling to the Panthers 2-0 Monday night at the BCSC Soccer Complex.
“The IHSAA didn’t make it easy for us,” East coach Sam LaVelle said. “With the sectional draw that we got, I knew this would be a good test for us to show where we’re at. So we feel a little decent going into sectional after that performance.
Bloomington South scored a goal in each half and outshot the Olympians (6-6-1) 14-3.
East will host Franklin Central for senior night on Thursday and will wrap up the regular season Saturday at Jeffersonville. The Olympians will play Center Grove Oct. 7 in the first round of the Center Grove Sectional.
“We still have to focus on Franklin Central and focus on Jeffersonville to secure second in the (Hoosier Hills) conference,” LaVelle said. “That was one of our goals for the season, so we have that to look forward to first, then we’ll start gearing up for Center Grove.”
