Letter: Please vote Loyd/Britt/Wheeldon for BCSC school board

Public education matters. For 10 years (2011-20), you allowed me to represent you on our school board here in Bartholomew County. I appreciated the opportunity to serve.

Educators anywhere have important and difficult roles to fill; it’s no different in our community. We hand the most precious parts of our lives, our children, to these educators every year for most of their meaningful developmental timeframe. In turn, they try to do their best every day to help their students understand themselves, the world around them, and what might their role be in shaping their (and our) futures. When I served on the school board, supporting the BCSC staff in their efforts to excel in those roles was our #1 priority.

Whittney Loyd is asking us to let her serve on the BCSC school board. At home, she’s a parent and a spouse; at work, she leads and directs an amazing group of people who daily achieve miracles of recovery with families trying to overcome turmoil; and, whenever and wherever you encounter her, she has a tremendous capacity to coax everyone around her to achieve more than they imagine they could. This last aspect of who she is what energizes me about supporting her request.

Leigh Britt is an educator. She has taught at both the high school and college levels, gaining a specific understanding of what it takes to open doors for our most capable students while ensuring every student reaches their potential. Leigh knows it takes collaboration between teachers, administrators, and the community to optimize these educational efforts. She has gained this experience while raising a family; she has been a customer of BCSC, an employee of BCSC, and now is willing to lend her expertise and perspective to supporting the BCSC leadership team. Isn’t this a perspective we want on the board?

Nicole Wheeldon has served BCSC on our board for the past four years, playing a key role as president, dealing with a number of community issues and leading perhaps the most important work our school board has to perform — choosing a new superintendent. Nicole is asking us to allow her to serve on the board again. Whether it’s leading the Cummins plant in Walesboro, raising three children with her husband, or challenging our community to trust her and her fellow board members to direct and support the BCSC leadership team in their work, Nicole has earned that trust going forward.

Please join me in casting a vote for Whittney Loyd, Leigh Britt, and Nicole Wheeldon to serve on the BCSC school board in the upcoming elections. I know that as board members, they will bring their unique skills and perspectives to the role. They will listen and they will lead. We will be proud we chose them to serve.
