Local barrel racer advances

Staff Reports

Columbus barrel racer Jimmy Bryant and horse Flash Red Jet placed fourth out of 116 entrants in the semifinals in barrel racing for The American Rodeo at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bryant now moves into the next round and will compete again this weekend in Fort Worth with the goal of making the top 10.

The top 10 competitors from the weekend then move on to The American rodeo March 1 in Arling-ton, Texas.

Bryant’s time was 13.984 seconds to place fourth. Bryant said he believes a time of less than 14 seconds could win The American’s barrel racing competition.

The American is billed as the world’s richest one-day rodeo based on its $1 million prize.

Bryant and the horse ran 14.218 to place in the top five in a competition in Verndale, Minnesota, to begin their competitive journey to Texas.
