82-year-old dies in accident at farm

An 82-year-old Bartholomew County man died after an accident involving a pickup truck on a farm in the 5000 block of North Talley Road.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies said Robert Legan, 82, was attempting to lower the tailgate of a pickup truck while accompanied by a 14-year-old.

The truck needed to be moved away from a metal-sided pole barn structure, deputies said.

Legan was standing behind the truck when the juvenile started the vehicle with the manual shift still in reverse, according to the sheriff department report.

The truck backed up, striking Legan, deputies said.

Legan was conscious when deputies arrived but died while being transported by ambulance to the hospital, according to the sheriff department.

He died from internal injuries, Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher said.

The 14-year-old was also taken to the hospital, but a condition report was not immediately available.

An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the sheriff’s department, which was assisted at the scene by Clifford Fire and Rescue and Indiana State Police.
