Tower jumper remains hospitalized

A Columbus high school student who was injured after jumping off the Mill Race Tower remains hospitalized.

The incident occurred 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mill Race Park. A Columbus police officer had been sent to the tower after someone reported a suspicious person there, said Sgt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police spokesman.

The teenager — whose identity has not been released — had gone through the blocked entrance to the tower and was sitting on the tower steps as the officer approached, Harris said. The teenager then climbed the steps and jumped.

He was transported by LifeLine helicopter to Methodist Hospital, where he is still receiving care, Harris said Wednesday afternoon.
