Westside group to visit villagers in Uganda

You can get moving late this month and help people 7,600 miles away move their lives forward.

That’s part of the idea behind the Mission Kaihura 5K fundraiser March 28 at Columbus’ Westside Community Church, Indiana 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard.

The race will help a group of Westside members raise enough money to visit people in the village of Kaihura, Uganda. Last year, two local teens, Nick Waskom of The Ridge and Sydney Newell of Westside spearheaded a drive that raised more than $40,000 for the villagers to get a water well to help drink, cook and stay healthy in a poverty-stricken area.

Atlanta-based ministry 410 Bridge helped that become a reality.

Now, 11 people, including Newell and The Ridge’s Waskom, will visit the Ugandans from June 18 through 27.

“We love the people of Kaihura, and want to go and encourage them,” said Peter Eicher, Westside’s youth pastor.

Cost for the 5K is $25. Online registration is available through indianatiming.com.
