Senior project in grand proportions

Abigail Beerwart’s senior project can be music to your ears — and in a grand way.

Consider this: Columbus native Jane Dutton, who has performed with stars such as Placido Domingo and others with New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, is stage manager for Beerwart’s English presentation of Englebert Humperdink’s “Hansel Und Gretel” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fridays at First, a musical series at Columbus’ First United Methodist Church, 618 Eighth St.

The cast includes Beerwart, who recently finished second in the Brown Music Scholarship competition, as Gretel; Rachel Ozols as Hansel; Marsha Placke as the Witch and Jennifer Heichelbech as the Dew Fairy.

Local music teacher and worship leader Jill Friedersdorf is the accompanist, and Abigail Wright is the artistic director. Ozols sang with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic slightly more than three years ago, and Heichelbech is well known locally for roles in Mill Race Players productions and also for multiple performances with the philharmonic.
