Snowplows part of INDOT exercise

NORTH VERNON — It’s not winter yet, but there will be snowplows out on U.S. 50 beginning Monday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will stage disaster-response exercises at the Muskatatuck Urban Training Center east of North Vernon. INDOT personnel from Greenfield and Crawfordsville Districts will train for earthquake and tornado emergencies.

The New Madrid Fault Line is the most active seismic area in the United States. The nearby Wabash Valley Seismic Zone is also a real concern.

For purposes of these exercises, the Muskatatuck Urban Training Center will represent Vincennes and the INDOT North Vernon Unit will simulate a unit facility near Vincennes. Seymour District offices are being used as a command center.

State police, fire fighters and EMS personnel will also be involved in the INDOT Emergency Planning and Response exercises.
