Local man arrested for attempted car theft

A Columbus man was arrested after being accused of attempting to steal a car from a used car lot.

Gilberto Mungia, 64, 10130 JoAnn Drive, was arrested on charges of attempted theft of an automobile, criminal trespassing, intimidation of a law enforcement officer and public intoxication, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were called to Don’s Auto Sales, 880 Jonesville Road, at about 6:38 p.m. Wednesday after Mungia reportedly got into a car on the lot and began driving it around. The vehicle’s owner got Mungia out of the vehicle, deputies said.

Mungia then told investigators he was employed at the used car lot, deputies said. The owner of the car lot said Mungia was not an employee, deputies said.

Mungia appeared to be intoxicated and then threatened Deputy Dane Duke several times, investigators said. Mungia was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $23,500 bond.
