Elizabethtown driver critical after roll-over

An Elizabethtown driver is listed in critical condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after his car collided with a tree and overturned.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies found Tyler Downs, 26, Elizabethtown, lying outside of the vehicle on County Road 550N just east of Marr Road about 5:08 p.m. Tuesday. Downs was transported by LifeLine helicopter to Methodist after the accident, deputies said.

A passenger — identified as Catricia Hoard, 28, Elizabethtown — and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter were not injured, deputies said.

Deputies said the single-vehicle accident happened as the family was traveling west on County Road 550N from County Road 250E in a 2002 Hyundai.

Hoard told deputies she was on her phone when she noticed Downs had veered off the south side of the road into the eastbound lane.

The vehicle struck a mailbox and then a tree on the driver’s side front and then rolled at least twice before stopping, Indiana State Police said. Downs was ejected from the vehicle, according to the state police investigation.

State police said it appeared that Downs was not wearing a seatbelt.

An Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist was called to investigate the accident scene, deputies said.
