Children’s reactions generally are as honest as Santa’s beard is long. So seeing their gaze mesmerized by the electric trains for several years now at the annual, free Festival of Lights Christmas Village is special. You can watch for yourself from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in Columbus. The event before the Festival of Lights Parade at 6 p.m. includes live music, children’s games, treats and seasonal vendors. Information: 812-376-2681

Make no mistake, the Columbus City Band is an ensemble of serious, volunteer musicians. But watch them rehearse a bit and you will see that members approach rehearsals with the lighthearted fun of sledding. Catch their holiday spirit at the Sounds of the Season and Holiday Classics free concert at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at The Commons, 300 Washington St.
