Franklin
Leonard E. Hatfield died at 8 p.m. January 6, 2016, at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, Indiana, due to cancer.
Len was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Leona; sisters, Marcella and Delores; and brothers, Phillip, Lawrence and Virgil.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred; a daughter, Pamela Anne Fulk; a son, Richard Hatfield; grandchildren, Darrell Hawk and Nicholas Hatfield; and brothers, Orland, Charles and Earl.
Born May 1, 1920, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Len grew up on a farm near Westport, Indiana. After graduating from Sand Creek Township High School, he joined the Army, serving as a medic during the World War II Normandy invasion. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech Sergeant, having received a Presidential Citation.
Returning to Indiana, Leonard studied mechanical engineering at Purdue. After graduation in 1952, he taught engineering classes for Purdue and worked as an engineer for Western Electric in Indianapolis for 32 years.
A lifelong Christian, Len was active in churches in Whiteland, Columbus and Franklin. A Mason since 1942, he was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, as well as being a Past Master, a former Grand Worthy Patron and a member of Eastern Star since 1974.
Leonard enjoyed playing golf as well as chess, bridge and many other card games.
A celebration of Leonard’s life will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 1 p.m. in Ransford Chapel at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin with calling from 11 a.m until service time.
Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.
