Emerson E. Sutton Jr., 82, of Columbus, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Kindred Transitional Care in Columbus.

He was born on June 25, 1933, in Decatur County, the son of Emerson E. and Laura Ann (Jordan) Sutton.

He lived most of his life in the Westport area and spent the past 20 years as a Columbus resident. He graduated from Sand Creek High School in 1951 and had worked at Bewley’s Bakery in Westport. Emerson joined United States Air Force in Sept. 1951. He served in Europe (France) from 1952 until 1955. While in France he had a walk-on part in the 1953 movie Jeunes Mariés. He retired as a Sergeant from the Airforce in 1969 with 16 years of service. He was member of North Christian Church in Columbus, former member of the Westport United Methodist Church and a 50 year member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Westport.

Survivors include sisters, Barbara J. Schwall of Winona, Mississippi, Bertha I. Maple of Columbus and L. Anne Dunbar of Carrollton, Mississippi; two nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Black officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. until time of service Wednesday.
