Accused shooter kept in jail on 72-hour hold

A Columbus man accused of wounding two people with a firearm over the weekend will stay in jail for the time being after being placed on a 72-hour hold.

Monday’s action gives prosecutors until Thursday to determine formal charges against Kyle K. Husbands, 28, of Hege Avenue.

Once formal charges are made, an initial hearing is likely to be scheduled with Bartholomew Circuit Judge Stephen Heimann, court officials said.

Husbands is accused of shooting Cody J. Spencer, 19, of Franklin, and Tyler L. Lucas, 24, of Columbus during a Saturday afternoon argument.

While the two men were hospitalized, a police spokesman said both are expected to recover from their wounds.

A short time after the 4 p.m. shootings were reported, Husbands was arrested at another residence on two Level 3 felony charges:

  • Aggravated battery
  • Battery with a firearm causing serious bodily injury with a previous conviction.

The shootings, which took place at a two-story home on Pearl Street near the R.L. Johnson Early Education Center, remain under investigation, police said.
