Rebecca E. Allee Rehbein of Columbus, Indiana, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at home surrounded by family and friends.

She was the beloved wife of the late Conrad Rehbein of Columbus and sister of the late Allen (Bo) Allee of Rockville, Indiana.

Rebecca was born in Bloomingdale, Indiana, Sept. 3, 1926, and was the daughter of Foster and Kathleen (Morrison) Allee. Rebecca and her brother were raised on the family’s farm and attended the Bloomingdale schools. She graduated from Purdue University in 1951 and earned her Masters in Education at Indiana University in 1973. For over twenty­-five years, Rebecca taught in the Columbus public schools, primarily at Columbus East High School.

A Columbus resident since 1954, she was very engaged with the community and with the First Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the women’s educational philanthropy, P.E.O. International, participating for more than 50 years, most recently as a member of Chapter DN, Columbus.

Rebecca was an avid learner and a loyal friend. She was part of an international high school teacher exchange in China in 1988. In her retirement, she studied Spanish and piano and traveled on yearly medical mission trips to small villages in Mexico. Rebecca was on the local board for the Indianapolis Art Museum and partook of various educational travel adventures. She regularly played tennis and hosted a group of retired teachers that discussed each issue of the Atlantic Monthly. She enjoyed her family immensely and visited frequently.

Rebecca is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen Rehbein of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Martha (Cameron) Owen of Concord, Massachusetts, and Polly Rehbein of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Rebecca and Abigail Owen and Zachary, Jonah and Adrita Rehbein­ Jones.

The family is most grateful for the loving hearts and hands of the people who cared for her these past few years. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Rebecca’s Life at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at the First Presbyterian Church, 512 Seventh St., Columbus. The family will receive friends in the Laws Room following the service.
