North teams take 2nd in opener

WHITELAND — To say that both the boys and girls track teams from Columbus North started off the season fast would be an understatement.

The teams traveled to Whiteland for their first outdoor meet of the season, taking on the host Warriors and the Roncalli Rebels. Both North teams finished second in the event, as the boys finished six and a half points behind Whiteland’s 75 with a score of 69.5 and the girls scored 65.5 points, just one point behind Roncalli.

After making a great comeback, Columbus North fell slightly behind in the final event and was not able to make up the ground as the Warriors won the 4×400-meter relay.

Sitting soundly ahead of Whiteland going into the last race of the night, the Rebels and Bull Dogs battled it out in the girls 4×400 relays. Roncalli was able to edge out the Lady Bull Dogs in a very narrow race to earn the win in not only the race, but in the meet.

Senior Katrina May, fresh off of helping lead the North gymnastics team to a state championship last week, started off her senior track season where she left off last year. May has had a successful indoor track season and looked to continue that in the Bull Dogs’ first outdoor meet. She did just that with another first-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches.

Both North teams have almost two weeks off to rebound before their next meet. The boys and the girls will host Bloomington South at 6 p.m. April 5.

Complete results from Wednesday’s meet will appear in Friday’s Republic.
