East senior Galle earns Cato Scholarship

Columbus East senior Alex Galle was one of 13 seniors statewide named as a recipient of the C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship Award.

Galle will be recognized alongside the other winners on April 14 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis. He will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Sporting a 4.21 grade-point average, Galle ranks second in his class of 364 at Columbus East. He has earned six varsity letters in tennis, basketball and track, serving as a team captain for the Olympians in tennis and basketball.

On the tennis court, Galle was The Republic’s Player of the Year this past fall as well as a member of the Academic All-State team.

To be eligible for the award, applicants had to be a senior that earned a varsity letter in at least one sport during the school year; had to maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale; could not have been ejected from any contest due to unsportsmanlike conduct; must have verified making a commitment to remaining substance-free throughout high school; and been nominated by his or her school’s principal or athletic director.
