Driver arrested after crashing vehicle into ditch

A local man was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he crashed his vehicle into a ditch at U.S. 31 and County Road 500N just south of Taylorsville, police said.

Dylan R. Burns, 21, 1521 Brookside Drive, was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for evaluation after the 1:32 a.m. Tuesday accident, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputy Kris Weisner was sent to the accident where he found Burns’ vehicle off the northeast corner of the intersection, deputies said. Burns had driven through a guardrail and was sitting on top of another guardrail above a watery ditch, deputies said.

Burns was unable to get out of the vehicle without falling in the water, deputies said. Columbus firefighters and German Township firefighters asked Burns to crawl out of the vehicle’s sunroof, deputies said.

When speaking with Burns, Weisner detected the driver had a strong odor of alcohol, glassy eyes and slurred speech, deputies said.

After being checked at the hospital, Burns was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, where he was later released on $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
