3 compete in geography bee

Three area students from Columbus schools will compete today in the Indiana National Geographic State Bee at IUPUI in Indianpolis.

Competitors include:

  • Jacob Strietelmeier, a fifth-grader at ABC-Stewart School
  • Eden Rose Zaborowski, a seventh-grader at Northside Middle School
  • Samuel Settle, a sixth-grader at St. Peter’s Lutheran School.

The Indiana competition is the second level of National Geographic Bee competition. The students represent winners of their school bees who then took an online qualifying test. The National Geographic Society invites up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the states to compete for the state championship.

Each state champion wins $100, a book about the national parks from National Geographic and a medal. The winner represents their state at the National Geographic Bee on May 22 to 25, competing for a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.
