Letter: Candidate’s background makes her uniquely qualified for judge

From: Charlie and Jayne Farber

Columbus

It is a pleasure to write this letter to support Kelly Benjamin for circuit court judge of Bartholomew County. Jayne and I have known Kelly and her family for a number of years. We believe that Kelly would be an outstanding judge. As residents of this community, we’d be fortunate and lucky to have her serving as judge on the circuit court bench.

Kelly has a solid background for this judgeship position. She’s been an attorney for 24 years and has experience with nearly 1,000 bench trials, 54 jury trials and 15 years prosecuting crimes. Her experience ranges from traffic tickets to homicides; juvenile, civil and criminal cases; business, municipal, contracts and personal injury cases.

However, it’s not just Kelly’s legal experience, it’s her personal qualities that give us confidence that she would be a great judge. It’s her work ethic and family values, her passion for the profession and her compassion for all those involved in court cases that define her as truly exceptional. Jayne and I have firsthand knowledge of how tirelessly she works, how her compassion can influence lives and how dedicated she is to this community.

For example, Kelly is currently the attorney for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and is the appointed commissioner hearing and deciding the child support and paternity cases for this community. She substitutes for all three sitting judges during their absences. We believe it is this courtroom experience that puts Kelly in the unique position to be ready to serve Day 1 as circuit court judge. Without a doubt, she knows, understands and loves the law and this community.

Kelly is a leader. She is a local and national presenter on community collaboration and the efforts needed to fight domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Based on her experience and knowledge, she has provided training and presentations to over 1,700 law enforcement officers, 260 judges, 320 prosecutors, 3,000 students, 240 probation officers and thousands of community citizens. Just last year the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce recognized her as one of the four recipients of the “Women in Leadership” award. Kelly has received recognition and awards from Columbus Regional Health, Turning Point, Family Crisis Center, Wisconsin Judicial College and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Please join Jayne, me and many others and vote for Kelly Benjamin for circuit court judge of Bartholomew County. Please vote on or before May 3 in the Republican Primary. Vote for a leader with the knowledge, integrity and work ethic that will keep our community safe and strong.
