Driver arrested after traveling 29 mph on I-65 near Columbus

A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy clocked a driver traveling 29 mph in a 70 mph zone near the Columbus exit on Interstate 65 and arrested him on a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Robert D. Mills, 46, 7412 Montana Ave., Hammond, has since been released from the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Kris Weisner stopped Mills in the northbound lanes of I-65 after he observed Mills braking erratically, crossing the center line and almost coming to a complete stop, deputies said. Weisner saw Mills drive into the breakdown lane and then return to the driving lane before the vehicle was stopped at the Columbus exit, deputies said.

Weisner saw several beer cans in the vehicle’s driver’s area and Mills showed multiple signs of impairment, deputies said.
