Leaking fluid leads to vehicle, driver involved in accident

Columbus police followed a trail of fluid from a damaged SUV to arrest its driver for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Officer Chad Lehman was sent to the 700 block of Werner Avenue at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday about the crash, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Witnesses told Lehman and Sgt. Jennifer Van Vactor that a red Dodge Durango had hit a utility pole.

Officers followed the trail of fluid from the Durango and found the vehicle in the 700 block of Wilson Street, Harris said.

The driver, Shanna Faye Branum, 34, 709 Reed St., was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood test, which she initially refused, Harris said. Officers then received a search warrant to order the blood draw, Harris said.

Branum was then taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where she was released after posting $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
