Crying child leads to arrest

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man after they were sent to the 9200 block of Tecumseh Street in Taylorsville about a child crying over a man who was unresponsive in a yard.

At about 1:26 a.m. Saturday, Deputy Teancum Clark found the child and moved him away from the male who was unresponsive, deputies said.

Clark made several attempts to wake up Raul Velazquez-Gonzalez, 27, 1525 Mill St., Columbus, deputies said.

Velazquez-Gonzalez, who woke up groggy and smelling of alcohol, agreed to a breath test which showed a reading of 0.210 percent, deputies said. The child was turned over to Child Protective Services and placed in foster care, deputies said.

Velazquez-Gonzalez was arrested on charges of public intoxication and neglect of a dependent, deputies said. He was first taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was cleared by medical staff before being taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, deputies said.

He was released from jail in lieu of $11,000 bond, jail officials said.
