Training camp welcomes new commander

The Indiana National Guard’s Atterbury- Muscatatuck training facility near Edinburgh has a new commander.

Col. John Silva became the facility’s 37th commander during a change of command ceremony June 3 at Camp Atterbury Railhead and Deployment Center on post. He assumed the post from outgoing Commander Col. Richard D. Shatto, a Columbus resident, who has held the post since December 2013.

The ceremony’s official reviewing officer was Maj. Gen. Courtney P. Carr, adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard and also a Columbus resident.

In attendance were Atterbury-Muscatatuck soldiers and employees, local dignitaries and previous post commanders.

Carr spoke of the outgoing post commander, recalling the many new training venues that Shatto and his team have added to Atterbury-Muscatauck, taking the training facility to new heights after its sole mission of deploying soldiers.

Shatto will assume his new post as the deputy chief of staff to the director of the joint staff at Indiana National Guard headquarters.

Silva is a career engineer officer whose prior assignments were deputy director of U.S. Property and Fiscal Officer Headquarters for the Indiana National Guard and prior deputy commander of Atterbury-Muscatatuck.
