Central star honored in All-American Game

JJ Montgomery, who will be an eighth-grader at Central Middle School, was named Defensive MVP of Sunday’s EPS All-American Game in New Orleans.

Montgomery recorded 10 tackles, including a sack, while playing defensive end and defensive tackle for the Red in a 33-0 loss to the Blue. He also played tight end and center on offense.

Last month, Montgomery starred in the Diamond Spring All-American Game in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was also invited to two All-Star games last fall, but could not participate because of injury.

Local golfer takes 2nd

Tobi Herron of Columbus made a hole-in-one Friday, but fell to Julia Potter of Indianapolis 2-and-1 in the finals of the IWGA Match Play Championship.

Herron aced the par-3 No. 10 at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club to pull within one shot. But the top-seeded Potter, last year’s Columbus city champion, responded with an ace on No. 12.

Herron had earned the third seed in the championship flight. She beat Seymour native Paxton DeHaven of Greenwood 4-and-2 in the first round, Cailyn Henderson of Westfield 5-and-4 in the quarterfinals and Betsy Werner of Indianapolis 4-and-3 in the semifinals.

Columbus East graduate Caroline Smith, who will be a junior at Loyola (Chicago), was the No. 12 seed in the championship flight and fell to Katie Sharp of Kendallville 3-and-2 in the first round.

North golfer finishes 5th

Danbi Kim, who will be a junior at Columbus North, carded rounds of 78 and 82 Sunday and Monday to finish fifth with a 160 in the girls division of the Central Junior Masters at Bear Slide Golf Club in Cicero.

Bryce Turner, who will be a senior at North, tied for 16th in the boys division at 158. Drew Smith, who will be a sophomore at North, tied for 42nd at 166.
