Mary Harris

Mary A. Harris, 94, of 12th Street, died at 7 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2016, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation.

Mary was born April 5, 1922, in Indianapolis, the daughter of William J. and Metta R. Hall Lovelace.

She married Newman M. Harris Sept. 4, 1944.

Mary was a member of Columbus Free Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where she helped with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed going to hymn sings, especially at Messiah Baptist Church, as well as watching the Gaithers and the Rev. Jim Denny on television.

Mary worked as an Avon representative for many years as well as at Columbus Regional Hospital as a dietitian. She loved to meet new people and enjoyed people watching.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2016, at Jewell­-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Calling will be from 1 to ­5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.

Survivors include her sons, Lee B. (Betty) Harris of Edinburgh, David R. “Red” Harris of Columbus and John R. (Cheryl) Harris of Seymour; daughters, Nancy (Edward) Loweth of Taylorsville and Mary (Roger “Butch”) Lee of Columbus; eight grandchildren; 12 great-­grandchildren; and five great­-great­-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Newman, on May 11, 1980; brothers, Albert James and Lawrence Lee Lovelace; a sister, Letta McKinney; and a son-­in-­law, Joseph Chasteen.
