Best of the best

The 2015-16 scholastic sports calendar was a memorable one in the Columbus area, marked by championship runs and record-setting performances.

In a star-studded year, though, a couple of stars shined just a little bit brighter. Those stars — Columbus East’s Rhett Myers and Columbus North’s Katrina May — are The Republic’s 2015-16 Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

——————–

RHETT MYERS

In the fall: Starred as a tight end on East’s 11-1 football team, earning Class 5A Senior All-State honors. He’s headed to the Air Force Academy on a football scholarship.

In the winter: Was a valuable post contributor off the bench for the Olympians in boys basketball.

In the spring: Placed second in the discus and fifth in the shot put at the state track and field meet. Myers established school records in both events this season.

KATRINA MAY

In the winter: Captained North’s state championship gymnastics team, finishing in a tie for second in the individual all-around at the state meet as the Bull Dogs established an IHSAA record for team score.

In the spring: Finished second in the indoor state track and field meet and third at the outdoor state track and field meet in the pole vault, an event she will compete in next year at Purdue University.
