Joseph Francis Thompson, M.D., age 87, died July 7, 2016. He was born September 10, 1928, in Indianapolis, the son of Dr. Charles F. and Ila Irvene Bridge Thompson.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Mansfield Huesmann Thompson. They were married on June 17, 1953.

Other survivors include four sons, John Bridge (Barbara) Thompson, Joseph Pearce (Susanne) Thompson, Samuel Tanner (Frances) Thompson and David MacDonald (Kelli) Thompson of Columbus, Indiana;  12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Charles B. Thompson; and a sister, Susanna Thompson Dumbrille.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Julia Huesmann Thompson, in 1966.

Dr. Thompson graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1946, Indiana University in 1950 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1953. During the summer of 1954, he was inducted into the United States Army Medical Corps. Joe was assigned to the Station Hospital at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, delivering over 1,000 babies in the OB/GYN service.

Following his service in the United States Army, he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Indiana University Medical Center and joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Indiana University School of Medicine until his retirement.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 15, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
