The 29th Annual AMSOIL USAC Indiana Sprint Week got off to a great start, with three different winners in three races and car counts exceeding 40 entrants per night. The series raced Friday night at Bloomington, continues tonight at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt and concludes Sunday night in Terre Haute with the makeup of the washed-out July 13 race.
Indianapolis driver wins opener
Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis picked a good time to win his first career USAC Sprint Car feature by winning the opening event of the Indiana Sprint Week at I-69 Gas City Speedway in Gas City on July 8. Courtney spun on the opening lap and had to restart on the tail of the 24-car starting field, but he gradually worked his way to the front and eventually took the lead.
Courtney went on to take the win against Bryan Clauson, Chris Windom, Shane Cottle and Brady Bacon.
Princeton resident wins USAC event
Kyle Cummins of Princeton captured his first career USAC Sprint Car feature winning round two at Kokomo Speedway on July 9. Cummins beat out defending series champion Robert Ballou by just a foot for the win. Kevin Thomas Jr. was third, followed by Jerry Coons Jr. and Brady Bacon.
Clauson takes Lawrenceburg
Clauson, of Noblesville, picked up his 41st career USAC Sprint Car win at Lawrenceburg Speedway on July 10. Courtney, the opening winner, was second, followed by Windom, C.J. Leary and Josh Hodges. Joey Kramer of Hanover won the companion Modified feature.
Brownstown results
Joe Godsey of Edinburgh won his first career Late Model feature at Brownstown Speedway on July 9. Godsey, who drives for Steve Vawter of Columbus, joins his grandfather, Ray Godsey, and uncle Steven Godsey as Late Model winners at the track. Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Kentucky, finished second to Godsey. Rounding out the top five were Adam Bowman of Seymour; Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, Kentucky; and Shelby Miles from Bloomington.
Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville won the Indiana Pro Late Model feature event for the fifth time this season, beating his uncle, Marty O’Neal of Spencer. Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington was third, followed by Brad Barrow of Bloomington and Justin Shaw of Greenwood.
Matt Boknecht of Seymour captured the Modified Main Event at Brownstown. Ryan Thomas of Seymour finished second, with Roy Bruce Jr. of Bloomington placing third. Completing the top five were Victor Lee of Danville, Kentucky; and Jacoby Hines of Nineveh.
Taylorsville’s Tim Eddelman won his second Super Stock feature of the year, taking the win over Aubrey Eagin of Bedford, Marty Cooper of Franklin, Jack Frye of Bloomington and David Brewer of Seymour.
Tim Rivers of Salem won his third consecutive Pure Stock feature. Jim Ruddick of Seymour was second. They were followed by Troy Clark of North Vernon, Josh Hayes of Seymour and Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee.
After hosting 150 race cars July 9, Brownstown will be back in action tonight with the Super Late Models, Indiana Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Pure Stocks on the race program. For more info, go to brownstownspeedway.com.
Scottsburg results
The Scott County Fairgrounds in Scottsburg conducted a special race program on Sunday, and Remington Gill of Mitchell took top honors in the Indiana Pro Late Model feature event. He was followed to the finish line by Hudson O’Neal, Joe Godsey, Marty O’Neal and Jeremy Hines of Seymour, who was driving a car owned by Brian Shewmaker of Columbus.
Randy Petro of Columbus was victorious in the Super Stock Feature at Scottsburg. Jamey Wilson of Seymour was second followed by Steve Peeden of Paragon, Branden Carr of Austin and Jim Pfeiffer of Vallonia.
Mickey Hines of Scipio won the Pure Stock feature race. He was followed by Derek Clegg, Erick Woodward, Donnie Wilson of North Vernon and Shannon Walp.
Donnie Modesty grabbed the Hornet feature event. He was followed by Trent Adams of Elizabethtown, Gage Clark, Jaden Mayhan of Elizabethtown and Brian Moore.
Paragon results
Paragon Speedway hosted a regular show on July 9. Feature winners included Ethan Barrow (Sprints), Winston Howe (Super Stocks), Tyler Neal (Bombers), Charles Shipley (Pure Stock) and Chad Taylor (Hornets). Felisha Lucas of Edinburgh was second in the Hornet feature.
This week in racing history
From this weekend in 1968 Gene Petro of Columbus won the Late Model feature at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus. The veteran driver was followed by Don Hobbs, Joe King of Columbus, Ira Bastin and Jim Haley.
Forty years ago in 1976, Bud Seymour won the Sportsman Feature at Twin Cities. Chuck Gilpin of Columbus was second and Phil Fultz of Clifford came home third.
At Lawrenceburg Speedway, Dick Gaines won the Sprint Car feature over Danny Smith and Mike Johnson. Bobby Carnes won the Stock Car main event.
Also 40 years ago at Brownstown Speedway, Paul Crockett won the Late Model feature over Ray Godsey, Ira Bastin and Barry Magers.
Ed Covey won the Hobby Stock main at Brownstown over John Mull and Scott Taskey of Columbus.
In 1986, Lee Fleetwood won the Late Model feature at Twin Cities. He was followed by Doug Ault, Mike Gibbs, Danny Eichler and Ed Hounshell.
Gregg Lyle of Columbus won the Street Stock feature the same night at Twin Cities. Larry Gingery of Columbus was second and Jeff Wilson placed third. Completing the top five were Dan Sallee of Elizabethtown and Mark Clark of North Vernon.
This weekend 30 years ago at Brownstown, it was Don Hobbs winning the Late Model feature. He was trailed to the finish line by Kevin Claycomb, Jim Curry, Steve Barnett and John Gill.
Mike Jewell captured the Modified Street Stock Main Event at Brownstown. Mark Barber of North Vernon was second, followed by Earl Plessinger, Steve Trabue and Jack Taylor.
Randy Petro of Columbus won his second straight Street Stock feature over Joe Johnson of North Vernon, Ron Lucas of Nashville, Tony Fraley and Dave Barnett of Columbus.
